HAWPC UPDATE MARCH 20TH-26TH

Hello HAWPC athletes and Parents,

We hope everyone had an amazing March Break. The end of March Break signifies the beginning of the busiest part of our season. We are excited for our final tune up tournaments and then the Provincial and National Championships begin.

Strangely enough our busiest season in the water corresponds with our busiest season outside of the water. Spring is when our Pool allocation for 2023/2024 occurs and when we build our programming for the following season.

Good luck to all of our athletes who are participating in the NCL this coming weekend in Etobicoke. This is the final tournament leading to Eastern Nationals.

CANADIAN WATER POLO HALL OF FAME

Once again the Mighty HAWPC was well represented in the Second Canadian Water Polo Hall of Fame Class.

A two-time Olympian, in 1976 and 1984, Paul Pottier was a prolific goal scorer on the Canadian and international scene. His 12-goal performance at the 1976 Olympics placed him among the top-4 water polo athletes in the world. Paul was a member of the HAWPC dynasty of the 1970’s, and won numerous Canadian and OUA titles while playing for McMaster. Paul Pottier was considered one of the most dominant offensive players of his era.

Formed in 1932, the Hamilton Aquatic Club hired 1928 Olympic bronze medalist swimmer Jimmy Thompson to build its aquatic programs. During the period of 1947 to 1966, the Hamilton Aquatic Club captured nine Canadian senior and sixteen Canadian junior Water Polo titles. Their run of 10 consecutive junior titles from 1957 to 1966 has never been equalled.

Jimmy Thompson was paramount in the development of water polo in Canada. His career spanned from 1932 to 1966 and his impact on the sport was tremendous. Under Jimmy’s leadership, the Hamilton Aquatic Club’s teams dominated the Canadian men’s water polo scene during the 1940’s, 1950’s and early 1960’s, becoming the first true challenge to Montreal’s supremacy. He was the key architect of the Hamilton high school water polo league, which is recognized as the oldest, continuously running league of its kind (1932 to the present day).

This is the second to last week of our winter program. We are always amazed at the growth and development with this group. As we conclude our Winter Session we will continue to work on game play.

Spring Registration is now open.

As it turns out our Spring program will be running for 5.5 weeks for a total 16.5 hrs of in water training. The program will run from from the week of April 9th, and the last practice will be May 17th.

The cost for the program is 140.00

We will also be running a free bring a friend session:

April 4th Laurier Pool 5:00-6:30 PM

April 5th Laurier Pool 6:30 – 8:00 PM

We will definitely require assistance in relation to our bring a friend night. We would love to see our older athletes come out and help with bring a friend night.

We will also need significant help the weekend of 13U Provincials in Brantford. This is the first Provincial Championship that the club has hosted in nearly a decade.

Busy week in the water to say the least.
